Gratitude Practice 2023 Nov 2: All the shades and all the hues... of blue

Navy. Midnight. Light. Turquoise. Cobalt. Indigo. Cyan. Azure. Royal. Steel. Cornflower.

Teal. Baby. Robin Egg. Carolina. Powder. Oxford. Prussian. Denim. Mayan. Iceberg. Sapphire. Lapis. Egyptian. Syke. Pigeon. Space. Aqua. Arctic. Peacock. Blue. The color of my car. My house. My watch. My bedroom. My Birkenstocks. My favorite sweater. The stones in my wedding ring. The pigment of my eyes and my preferred color of ink to write with. I see blue first when I close my eyes and breath in deeply and peace always feels like peacock blue in my brain. I scan the crowd, the sky, the ocean, the clothing rack, the crayola box for blue first…and blue always. Don’t have or need a favorite shade because I love and appreciate all of them. Grateful that yellow and green get cozy in all of the right ways to create this deep and nourishing color…what an enchanting love affair. Brilliantly paired with the brightness of orange and coral and apricot and rust and vermillion. Blue is a good neighbor with green on one side and violet on the other, always pleasantly showing up when needed but never staying too long at the party. Blue gives lots of good life energy to both sides of the street. According to the smart people of the internet, “the color blue represents both the sky and the sea and is associated with open spaces, freedom, intuition, imagination, inspiration and sensitivity. Blue also represents the meaning of depth, trust, loyalty, sincerity, wisdom, confidence, stability, faith and intelligence.”

For me, the color blue is steady and constant and ever faithful and I’ve come to value and appreciate that feeling. If blue were materialized in person form…it would be wise and kind and respectable and hardworking and generous and forgiving all the while with a big splash of fun and spontaneity waiting in the wings. It would probably be named something steady like William or Nadine…but its friends would know them as Willy and NeNe. Blue would know all of the words to classic rock anthems because it’s been around BUT would also have a deep playlist of classical favorites with a tiny hint of blue grass and funk peppered in. Blue would rent a convertible on vacation because why the hell not and donate without shame to the NPR fund drive…because good reporting makes a strong community. Blue holds the door open for people and returns the shopping cart no matter the length of the walk…because…seriously this is not hard. Blue would definitely frequent the farmers market and shop local AND when needed Blue indulges in slurpees, ding dongs and pizza rolls. Blue owns both LL Bean and “Made for TV” gadgets….because the color blue is both balanced and chill and sometimes a real sucker for a deal. Blue has nothing to prove. Blue just is. Blue came to play but doesn't need to win…it's already got a mantle full of trophies and awards. Blue is life goals and something I’m forever grateful for.
