Gratitude Practice 2023 Nov 17: Home Alone

Grateful for the holiday cult classic Home Alone. Grateful for the 1990’s iconic Kevin McCaslaster and his angsty curiosity and surprisingly impressive survival skills. Grateful for Marv and Harry and well placed micro machines and flying paint cans and epic comedic reactions. Grateful for the grumpy scary old man neighbor who ends up saving the day but only after he haunts the neighborhood. Grateful for….”Kevin!!” Mostly grateful for how hard my kid laughs at this silly film. Belly laughter is guaranteed every time every time we watch followed by a series of questions and thoughtful statements.

“Mom, don't you think it's irresponsible for Kevin's parents to forget him? I mean, how would you feel if that happened to you?"

“Mom, here is how I would defend our house if Harry and Marv came over….”

“See Mom, that old neighbor man is just sad on the inside, not mean.”

“Mom, I'm really glad Kevin's family came home and he is not alone anymore.”

Grateful for my kid and how she gets so into movies that I loved watching. Grateful for her questions and comments and gasps and giggles and how she gets so worried about the outcomes each time she watches even as she knows how it will end. Grateful for Home Alone 2 as its decent but I cannot recommend part 3 or 4... total rubbish and almost an insult to the franchise. Disney did produce a new version last year that is really quite delightful and worth watching even if you don't have young kiddos. We will probably watch this movie a few more times this holiday season and I don't hate it one tiny bit.
